LAW ENFORCEMENT/SECURITY COVERAGE INDEX James Bell Jr. -- Law Enforcement/Security Section Editor This Section Of Our Publication Is Intended For Those Actively Employed As - Or Considering Employment As - A Law Enforcement Officer [LEO] Or As A Contract Security Officer. We Also Welcome Those In The Bail Enforcement And Corrections Professions.
On 17-March-2005 I got to spend a very enjoyable day at the Sandy City PD re-certifying as a GLOCK Armorer. Paul Smith was the instructor, and he did a great job. The majority in attendance were from various LE agencies in the area. It is always good to brush up on your skills. If your department or security company offers you the opportunity to take training - any training - I recommend that you take them up on the offer. You can NEVER learn enough.
During training, I found out a great deal about the new GLOCK product that has been "announced" but that there isn't much solid information on. I am checking to see how much I should spill at this point. I have to say that I am excited to see how this comes out. Gaston and his crew really are interested in doing things the right way. It shows in their current pistols, and I suspect will show in this lastest product as well.
AR-15 Recommendations: As I am sure that you are aware, our recommendations for an AR-15 carbine have been up for a little while now. I found out yesterday that if you do a search on AR-15 Carbine on google.com, we are the second site listed. I was wondering why our traffic has increased dramatically in the last month. Now we know. Our recommendations for building your own AR-15 Carbine with a 16" barrel. Click Here We are still reviewing upgraded rail-equipped handguards and hope to have a recommendation shortly. I want to make sure that whatever we recommend is in the scope of most LE Armorers. There are still a lot of departments that prohibit any work that requires the removal of the barrel. We are also starting to work on reviews of components for 20" and 24" barrel rifle-configuration AR-15's. Expect to see those coming in the next few months. We have not taken a break from looking at pistols. Our review of the LaserMax Internal Lasers for GLOCK Pistols is now on-line. Click Here. Next up expect to see reviews of some patrol vehicle supplies, and reviews of retention holsters and duty gear in general.
On 13-September-2004 THE DARK TIME ENDED. The "Assault Weapons Ban" has expired. This was the official notice posted on the ATF Website... Semiautomatic Assault Weapon Update By statute, the prohibitions relating to semiautomatic assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices expired on September 13, 2004. As a result, certain sections of the Gun Control Act, 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44, and its implementing regulations, 27 CFR Part 478, are no longer in effect. It is about time. While most Police Chiefs must be "PC" to survive in their political environment, those of us in the trenches know that this legislation did nothing to help us. It hurt law-abiding American Citizens - including those of us in LE and associated professions who are also firearms collectors and enthusiasts. For those of you that are not firearms enthusiasts, it means that it is legal for ALL civilians to own new magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Even magazines marked as LAW ENFORCEMENT ONLY can now be legally owned by anyone. Bayonet lugs, large magazines, and flash suppressors are fine for everyone again. When was the last time ANYONE used a mounted bayonet in the execution of a crime? The dark time has ended. Let us be ever vigilant that nothing like it comes again.

If you are looking for a CQB optic, take a look at our review of the EOTech 552.A65. I have looked at a lot of products and systems, and this one is my pick.
We recently got through looking at the Metal-Tec 1400 from Torfino Enterprises. It's a personal metal detector designed to assist in both arrest searches and in the "terry search". If you would like to know more, click right here. As always, if you are not authorized by your agency, you do not want to be carrying or using unauthorized tools. Please keep this in mind. -- James Bell Jr. - Law Enforcement/Security Section Editor TCTR |
